Property description Rarity: Island in the Venice lagoon

Fisolo is a small artificial island in the southern Venetian lagoon that was built in 1881. It is strategically located on the Re di Fisolo canal, northwest of the port of Malamocco, one of the most important entrances to the lagoon. The creation and importance of the island was closely linked to the military requirements of the time, as Venice, due to its exposed position in the lagoon, historically built defenses to protect the city and its entrances.
As part of the lagoon's defense system, Fisolo played an important role in protecting against possible attacks from the sea. During the Second World War in particular, the island was further fortified and bunkers were built, which are the only remaining buildings today. These wartime relics bear witness to the island's military past and are also a silent monument to this period of history. Although Fisolo is now uninhabited, these remains offer an insight into the strategic importance that such small islands in the Venetian lagoon once had.
Over time, however, the island has been severely affected by erosion. In order to protect the coastline and stop the decay, marble blocks from Istria were placed along the perimeter of the island. These measures were intended to prevent the progressive loss of the island due to the constant currents and tides of the lagoon. Although the interventions have protected the shore from further erosion, they have permanently changed the natural structure of the island.
Today, Fisolo is less of a tourist attraction than a testimony to the historical use and preservation of the lagoon. The island symbolizes the balancing act between human intervention and the protection of the sensitive environment of the Venetian lagoon.

Location: Venice (Italian: Venezia) is a unique city in north-eastern Italy, known worldwide for its incomparable location on over 100 small islands in the Venetian lagoon. These islands are connected by a network of more than 400 bridges and countless canals, which have earned the city the nickname "La Serenissima" - the most Serene. Venice is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, not only because of its history and culture, but also because of its remarkable architecture and way of life.
Venice was founded in the 5th century AD when inhabitants of the Roman mainland fled to the lagoon to escape invasions. Over the centuries, the city developed into a major maritime and trading power. In the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, the Republic of Venice was a central trading hub between Europe and the Middle East and dominated the eastern Mediterranean. Its wealth was reflected in its magnificent palaces, churches and public squares.
The historic center of Venice is characterized by impressive architecture that reflects the wealth and power of the city in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The most famous buildings include St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and the Rialto Bridge. St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco) is the heart of the city and is visited by tourists from all over the world.
Venice's architecture is characterized by a mixture of Gothic, Byzantine and Renaissance influences, all of which contribute to the city's unique aesthetic. Many buildings are built on wooden piles driven deep into the lagoon floor to support the foundations. Despite this feat of architecture, Venice has had to contend with flooding and slow subsidence over the centuries.
Venice is also an important center of art and music. The city was home to famous artists such as Tintoretto, Titian and Canaletto. Venetian painting flourished particularly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The music scene was also remarkable: Venice is the birthplace of the composer Antonio Vivaldi, whose "Four Seasons" is one of the most famous works of classical music.
The Venice lagoon is not only a scenic wonder, but also an ecological one. It provides a habitat for numerous animal species and is a unique ecosystem. Everyday life in Venice is very different from that in other cities, as the main form of transportation is via canals. The famous gondolas, water cabs and vaporetto boats (water buses) are the main means of transportation.
